Candidate for Vice President

Mike WalshMike Walsh – Vice President

In 1967 Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a speech to a Stanford University audience. I was three years old at that time.  In that speech he described two separate and different Americas. One America was filled with prosperity and opportunity, freedom and human dignity, and culture and education for the mind.  In the other America he described a system that turns hope into despair, and leaves millions perishing on an island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of prosperity. As I listened to that speech I realized that in my lifetime not much has changed.  That to me is a tragedy.

We have an opportunity to begin to rewrite history. We have an opportunity rewrite the narrative that MLK spoke of so many decades ago. I believe that we are the right organization at the right time and with the right people to finally make those changes happen. I believe we’ve been granted a gift from the legislature.  They have given us the power to create changes at a local level that will meet the needs of all students.

We are no longer struggling with the question of, “Who has a right to an education”? We have decided that is the right of the ready, the reluctant, and the resistant.  That is the essence of my commitment. It is my desire to continue to be a voice for this association to realize that vision for all of the students we serve.
