On July 9, 2008, the State Board of Education voted to mandate Algebra I for all eighth graders in California.  The California School Boards Association strongly opposes this decision. The simple fact is this mandate will result in a strain on the relationships of students, math teachers and parents of those students who are simply not ready for Algebra in middle school. It ultimately sets schoolchildren up to fail, and places a heavy burden on California’s schools – already lacking adequate funding and infrastructure – to achieve the nearly impossible.
