Overview
The California School Boards Association’s vision statement foresees a state where the futures of all children are driven by their aspirations, not bounded by their circumstances. Unfortunately, too many children currently face physical, psychological and social conditions, which impact their ability to succeed. Local school districts and county offices face a difficult task as they try to ensure the health and well-being of students, while at the same time attempting to meet challenging student achievement and fiscal accountability requirements.
Given these circumstances, CSBA, in concert with the Cities, Counties, Schools Partnership, the California State Association of Counties and the California League of Cities, can be an important resource to local districts and communities by working to build relationships with state agencies and organizations that attempt to improve the lives of children. The Condition of Children’s Council has the potential to raise awareness and help facilitate dialogue between state and local officials that cut across traditional organizational boundaries. This cross-jurisdictional focus could support our ultimate goal of academic achievement for all students.
The Conditions of Children Council (CCC) consists of primarily school board members and superintendents, as well as representatives from the League of California Cities, the California State Association of Counties and the CCS Partnership. By including representatives from all locally elected officials that deal with youth related issues, the CCC can help facilitate a common message from the local level and encourage dialogue and build relationships between local and state officials.
The CCC is focused on learning about the priorities of various agencies and identifying opportunities for collaboration; strengthening understanding about issues among and between state and local officials; and advocating on behalf of children.
