Dear Editor:

While it is clear there are extraordinary challenges in balancing the state’s budget, the (name of district/county office) board of education strongly opposes the governor’s 2008-09 budget proposal and his plans to suspend the Proposition 98 minimum funding guarantee for education. Our students and schools did not create this budget problem, and their progress shouldn’t be undermined because of it. The governor’s budget reductions would be disastrous to public schools and they are fundamentally inconsistent with the state’s goal of improving student achievement.

The governor’s budget proposal calls for unprecedented cuts to K-12 students and schools by reducing Proposition 98 funding by $400 million in the current year and suspending Proposition 98 funding for 2008-09. Our community must unite together to protect this funding for the educational success of our students.
