Demurrer hearing held in Alameda County in response to California School Finance Lawsuit

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Sacramento, Calif. – A hearing on the State’s demurrer against the California School Finance Lawsuit, Robles-Wong v. California, took place today at the Alameda County Superior Court. Governor Schwarzenegger and the State of California filed the demurrer in September, challenging the legal sufficiency of the complaint. All parties presented oral arguments and addressed questions from Judge Steven Brick regarding the education provisions in the State’s constitution. The broad coalition of plaintiffs, which includes students, parents, school districts, county offices of education, the California School Boards Association, California State PTA and the Association of California School Administrators, anticipate a ruling from the court by mid-January.

“Today’s hearing provided us the opportunity to address questions from the court, while emphasizing the need to align California’s school finance system with the educational program that the State has put into place,” said Richard Hamilton, CSBA’s Acting General Counsel.

Documents outlining the plaintiffs’ opposition and defendants’ reply to the demurrer are available at www.fixschoolfinance.org.  For more information about the California School Finance Lawsuit, please contact Brittany McKannay, CSBA Public Information Officer, at (916) 669-3244.
