Revenue Volatility In California
Following the boom-bust revenue cycle in recent years, concerns have developed about volatility in California’s General Fund revenues. This brief from the Legislative Analyst’s Office quantifies the amount of revenue volatility experienced in California during the past quarter century, identifies the main causes of the volatility, its effect on Proposition 98 funding for schools, and discusses the outlook for volatility in the future. 

Charter Schools: To Enhance Education’s Monitoring and Research, More Charter School-Level Data Are Needed
The General Accounting Office examined the flexibility allowed charter schools in each state and accountability required of them, as well as the implications of the No Child Left Behind Act on charter schools. The GAO recommends that the U.S. DOE help states monitor the performance of charters. 

PPIC Statewide Survey: Special Survey on the California State Budget, January 2005
This survey by the Public Policy Institute of California indicates that a majority of state residents disapprove of the way Gov. Schwarzenegger’s budget proposal shortchanges education, with about six in 10 adults believing the state should spend more money for K-12 public schools. This survey is the fourth in a series of special surveys conducted in collaboration with The James Irvine Foundation that intend to raise public awareness, inform decision-makers, and stimulate public discussion about the current state budget and the underlying state and local finance system.
