Help celebrate CSBA’s 75th year

The California School Boards Association marks its 75th anniversary during 2006, and we’re pulling out all the stops to make this year one of our best ever.

Throughout the year, California School News will recap some of the highlights from years past in a special feature called “Looking Back.” Whether from the original California School Trustees Bulletin, as the newsletter was called in the 1940s, the California School Boards Association Bulletin of the ’50s, CSBA News in the ’70s and ’80s, or today’s California School News, these bits of nostalgia demonstrate that California school board members have always had one goal: to improve the educational prospects of their students.

For instance, teacher tenure was a key issue for CSBA in 1955. After studying the issue, the association’s Tenure Committee recommended legislative changes to give local school boards more authority in the dismissal of “unfit and incompetent teachers.” Unfortunately, AB 2600 died in committee in May, 1955 – but the issue lives on.

Also, in the January, 1979 issue of CSBA News, one headline read: “CSBA actively working to produce realistic, workable school finance proposal.” That could be the headline for our story on adequate funding.

So join us as we take a fun and informative walk down memory lane this year.
