CDE gives counsel on insulin administration

Schools and other local educational agencies have clearer guidance on their role in managing the administration of insulin for students with diabetes-related disabilities following the announcement of an agreement Aug. 8 between state Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell and the American Diabetes Association.

Under the agreement, a school employee who is unlicensed and who has been adequately trained may administer insulin pursuant to the student’s Individualized Education Program or Section 504 plan when school nurses or other school health care professionals are not otherwise available.
