CSBA offers Forecast for free as state budget woes grow
Published: December 13, 2007
The Sacramento Bee reports that projections of California's budget shortfall have reached $14 billion, and now the pressure is on to consider spending cuts and tax hikes. The new estimate is significantly larger than the $9.8 billion gap previously calculated by the Legislative Analyst's Office. It may result in midyear budget cuts this fiscal year, and it jeopardizes state funding in the 2008-09 budget year that begins July 1.
Fortunately, every school district or county office board member can participate in a knowledgeable briefing on the state's revenue problems—and the potential impacts on local budgets—at CSBA’s annual Forecast Webcast Thursday, Jan. 17, the association has announced.
Given the growing urgency of the issue, the Forecast is offered free of charge for the first time. The presentation, from 10 a.m. to noon, will feature a panel discussion of leading budget experts, including:
- Strategies on how boards can build their 2008-09 budgets
- Local implications for potential midyear budget cuts
- Statewide fixes
"The free Forecast is new this year. There will be no charge to CSBA members," said Executive Director Scott P. Plotkin. "Also new this year, CSBA’s Forecast Webcast will come live directly to you via your computer. Hear first-hand everything you need to know right from the comfort of your own office or home."
Space is limited to the first 200 registrants.
"Register online today for this complimentary Webcast. You must register to receive the log-in instructions," Plotkin said.
