Forecast Webcast, workshops and other events planned in new year

CSBA members can participate in the upcoming Forecast Conference Webcast from the comfort of their own home or office, and those wanting to attend a New and First-term Board Member Institute or Brown Act briefing won’t have to travel much farther.

As in previous years, the 2008 Forecast will feature insights on developing trends affecting public education; CSBA Executive Director Scott P. Plotkin and Assistant Executive Director Rick Pratt will preview state budget and policy developments unfolding in Sacramento, and consultant Christopher Thornberg will give his expert analysis of economic trends that will affect local budgets throughout California.

Building on last year’s experience, when Forecast was webcast to 10 regional locations, this year’s event will be available to anyone with an Internet connection. It’s part of the association’s continuing effort to make it easy to give members the background they need to make informed decisions for the benefit of the students they serve. Participants will see and hear the presentations as they unfold, and they’ll be able to e-mail in questions to the speakers and print out information or save it on their personal computers.

The two-hour presentation will begin at 10 a.m. Jan. 17, just two weeks after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger unveils his state budget proposal. Registration for the Forecast Webcast will be available on the CSBA Web site and will cost just $49—a discount of nearly 38 percent from last year’s fee.

Other upcoming events

The New and First-term Board Member Institute is a unique, two-day training opportunity that can only be offered in person. This innovative seminar is one of the best opportunities for newly elected and first-term trustees to learn about their unique role and responsibilities while they hone their knowledge of effective approaches to governance, finance, human resources and student learning.

The Institute will once again be offered in tandem with a workshop on the Ralph M. Brown Public Records Act. Presented by attorneys, the Brown Act: What You Need to Know is a fact-filled workshop covering legal issues dealing with agenda development, posting and distribution, open meeting laws, closed sessions and related topics.

Both the Institute—a Friday-Saturday event—and the Brown Act workshop, offered on Fridays, will travel to several locations around the state:

  • Jan. 25-26 at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento
  • Feb. 1-2 at the Sheraton Los Angeles
  • Feb. 8-9 at the Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel
  • Feb. 29- March 1, at the Sheraton Suites San Diego
  • March 7-8 at the Kern County Office of Education in Bakersfield
  • March 14-15 at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine
  • April 4-5 at the Red Lion Hotel in Redding
  • April 11-12 at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Fresno

The Institute’s registration fee is $255. The Brown Act workshop costs $130.
