New report explores ways to enhance instructional time
A task force chaired by CSBA President Kathy Kinley has released a report to spur education leaders to find ways to create and take advantage of increased instructional time for students and for teachers. The “Instructional Time Task Force Guide” is designed to prompt discussion by school boards on strategies and resources needed and to investigate ways to augment the limited time that schools already have at their disposal.
“In order for all of our students to achieve to their fullest potential, they may need the gift of time,” Kinley said. “This might be accomplished through changes in the school day, the school year, extended learning opportunities or through other options.
“Some students need more time to master state standards. Others need more time to become proficient in English,” Kinley added. “Unfortunately, increases in instructional time for [math and English] have resulted in decreases in time for subjects such as science, art, music and social science. So CSBA’s Instructional Time Task Force reviewed policies that boards can establish regarding the use of instructional time and adjustments in school calendars that can enhance student achievement.”
The guide was the centerpiece of a workshop conducted by Kinley, CSBA Assistant Executive Director Holly Jacobson and Research Consultant Marguerite Noteware at CSBA’s Annual Education Conference and Trade Show that recently concluded in San Diego.
