Middle school mother Reyna Urisotegui, center, learns about school counseling services and academic expectations during a visit to her home in June by Sacramento City Unified School District Superintendent M. Magdalena Carrillo Mejia and state Superientendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell. The informal face-to-face was part of O'Connell's efforts to promote the Nell Soto Parent/Teacher Involvement Program, named for the Pomona Assembly member who sponsored legislation creating the grants. More than $9 million remains available for the program, and O'Connell urges school leaders to apply.
