‘Learn More California’ to advocate for adequacy

Natomas Unified School District board Vice President Ron Dwyer-Voss—a veteran community organizer—and CSBA Governance Consultant Christopher Maricle launched the community engagement component of a statewide education adequacy campaign last month at the Sacramento County Office of Education.

The new campaign, “Learn More California: Give Schools the Tools to Succeed,” is designed to help school board members, principals and superintendents strengthen relationships with their communities. It will help them find out what business and civic leaders and parents expect of their public schools and educate them about challenges facing schools today. Learn More California also aims to help school leaders organize grassroots advocacy for increased state support and grater flexibility for public education.

CSBA and the Association of California School Administrators are staging 10 regional training sessions as part of a long-term, collaborative effort to articulate communities’ visions for their schools, raise awareness of school finance problems and identify strategies to adequately fund public education so that schools can do their jobs. This round of trainings will prepare members of CSBA’s Board of Directors and Delegate Assembly to train others in their own local communities.
