New committee seeks to improve student health

CSBA’s Board of Directors last month approved the establishment of a 15-member School Health Advisory Committee to research, study and inform members about school-related health policies. The effort is part of a two-year, $300,000 grant from The California Endowment that’s designed to give school governance leaders the knowledge, resources and tools they need to improve student health.

The committee will include school board members, superintendents and others who care about student health. Its first focus will be on asthma. Studies show that nearly one California child in eight—approximately 1.7 million children—has been diagnosed with the condition at some point, and 827,000 currently suffer from it, missing an average of 2.6 days of school per year.

Other issues the committee will address include oral health, mental health, fitness, nutrition, school-based health centers and diabetes.
