Jan. 15 Forecast Webcast will give free preview of 2009 fiscal and policy issues

For the third year, CSBA will present its annual Forecast Webcast as a free, online presentation that members can view and interact with from their work or home computers. The two-hour event will begin at 2 p.m. Jan. 15.

This year’s presenters will tackle many of the local, state and federal economic issues that are on everyone’s minds, as well as potential education policy shifts that could result from last month’s elections.

“In this time of revenue shortfalls and midyear budget cuts, it’s more important than ever for school districts and county offices of education to have accurate, up-to-date information on the state budget,” said Rick Pratt, CSBA assistant executive director of Governmental Relations. “The annual Forecast Webcast provides just that. It’s the perfect starting point for learning how the state budget picture may affect district and county office budgets in the coming year.”

Pratt, along with CSBA Executive Director Scott P. Plotkin, will explain the latest state budget and policy developments unfolding in Sacramento. Economist Christopher Thornberg, a member of state Controller John Chiang’s seven-member Economic Advisory Council and a co-founder of the Beacon Economics research and consulting firm, will round out those presentations with his expert analysis of economic trends that will affect local district and county office budgets throughout California.

Participants will see and hear the presentations as they unfold, and they’ll be able to e-mail questions to the speakers and print out information or save it on their computers. Governance team members are encouraged to organize local viewing events where they will be able to watch the Forecast Webcast together and discuss what they learn; it’s important, though, to keep in compliance with open-meeting laws by being careful to avoid gathering a quorum of voting members outside a publicly noticed meeting.
