CSBA’s July 10-12 Curriculum Institute to cover ‘Educating the Whole Child’

With a focus on “Educating the Whole Child—Collaborating to Move Beyond Reading and Math,” this year’s CSBA Curriculum Institute, in Monterey July 10-12, will feature keynote addresses by Stanford University’s Denise Clark Pope and Fresno and Long Beach superintendents Mike Hansen and Christopher Steinhauser.

Hansen and Steinhauser will describe their districts’ involvement in a unique experimental program—the Fresno-Long Beach Partnership for Improved Student Success—that was established by state Superintendent Jack O’Connell as part of an overall effort to close the achievement gap.

The two districts, with a combined enrollment of more than 150,000—mostly students of color or English learners, and from low-income families—will collaborate to increase graduation rates and prepare all students for success in higher education, careers with significant growth potential, or both.

Pope, an expert on today’s “stressed-out” students, will deliver an interactive lecture and discussion that focuses on student health, school engagement and academic integrity.

The institute will also feature these workshops:

“Redwood City 2020” will examine a community collaborative that promotes a variety of youth development and education strategies benefitting the young people of Redwood City and the broader community.

“Working Collaboratively to Meet the Needs of Foster Youth” will focus on the special needs of foster children, the challenges of working with the foster-care system and examine the educational obstacles faced by foster youths. The workshop promises to give participants the tools they need to build coalitions that will provide the fundamental support necessary to give these students stable and successful adult futures.

“Taking Center Stage” is the statewide movement to reform California middle schools. CSBA Immediate Past President Kathy Kinley will moderate a panel discussion on this important work.

The conference fee, including materials and lunch, is $305. There’s little time remaining to take advantage of CSBA’s discounted rates when reserving lodging at the Hyatt Regency Monterey. June 16 is the last day to reserve housing at the special group rate of $179. Call the hotel directly at 800-233-1234.
