CSBA effective at NSBA Delegate Assembly

CSBA’s delegation to the National School Boards Association’s annual Delegate Assembly meeting in Orlando last March was instrumental on two important issues: opposing national academic standards and supporting American Indian language studies.

CSBA President Paul H. Chatman led the opposition to a proposal that could have resulted in NSBA support for the development of national academic standards. After that resolution was defeated, the California delegation joined several other states in advocating an alternative proposal to ensure that NSBA would continue to oppose national standards on behalf of the NSBA Federation, which is composed of state school boards associations. That resolution was adopted by a wide margin.

The California delegation also played a key role in passage of a policy and resolution urging Congress to support American Indian language instruction and full funding of the Native American Language Act of 1990. CSBA Past President Luan B. Rivera spoke in support of the proposals for the California delegation. She currently chairs the NSBA Pacific Region, where this issue has been a priority.
