Back-to-School Webcast: Log on and learn Sept. 19

There’s still time to register for CSBA’s free Back-to-School Conference Webcast, coming Sept. 19 with up-to-the-minute briefings on the state budget and other legislative news, the State Board of Education and the state of public K–12 education in California.

The two-hour Back-to-School Webcast will be transmitted live starting at 10 a.m. to the first 250 people who register. Governance teams are encouraged to get together to view the presentation with their colleagues, because technical issues limit log-ons.

The annual briefing always provides a comprehensive overview of the critical issues directly affecting schools and students. In his annual Top 10 list, Executive Director Scott P. Plotkin will outline the most significant issues facing local education governing boards, and Assistant Executive Director for Governmental Relations Rick Pratt will report the latest on the state budget and the Legislature.

Other topics will include the State Board of Education’s recent mandate that all eighth-graders take Algebra 1 and other developments, such as the lawsuit that CSBA’s Education Legal Alliance has filed against SBE over the facilities that school districts will be required to provide to charter schools under Proposition 39 starting next year (see related story on page 1). Other developments at the state and federal level will also be covered, including the future of the No Child Left Behind Act following President Bush’s departure from the White House.

Presented over the Internet for the past two years instead of in its previous regional road show format, the Back-to-School Conference Webcast offers an unmatched opportunity to get the inside story on issues sure to affect the new school year.
