School Wellness: ‘Share, learn, collaborate’ Oct. 6-7

Building upon the success of the nation’s largest conference on critical health and wellness issues and their impact on student achievement, held in 2007, the 2009 School Wellness Conference is poised to provide education and health leaders with the information, strategies and resources they need.

The conference will take place Oct. 6-7 at the Anaheim Marriott, with a complimentary preconference session Oct. 5—“Finding Common Ground: Collaborating to Prevent Childhood Obesity”—limited to registrants only. Organizers say the gathering comes as student health and education needs are escalating and critical support services, programs and resources are being cut.

“The 2009 School Wellness Conference, jointly hosted by CSBA, the California Department of Education and California Department of Public Health, provides a vital opportunity for school and community leaders from across the state to share, learn and collaborate on strategies that will meet the increasing health and education needs of children in their communities,” said Martin Gonzalez, CSBA’s deputy executive director of Financial Programs and Policy Services.

This year’s conference will:

  • focus on school governance leadership
  • bring together school and community leaders to share collaborative approaches
  • address health disparities and support a cultural shift toward healthier students

“The conference will provide a forum for education and health stakeholders to come together in a collaborative environment to communicate on key wellness issues. Through sharing best practices and resources, highlighting model programs, and discussing policy implementation and evaluation strategies, school community stakeholders will leave the conference better prepared to create sustainable, healthy learning environments that positively impact all children,” said Betsy McNeil, CSBA student wellness consultant.

The $275 registration, which includes conference materials and lunch both days, rises to $350 after Sept. 18.
