The Position
The Board of Trustees of the newly formed Trinity Alps Unified School District invites qualified candidates to apply for the position of superintendent of schools. The ideal candidate will embrace our community and become a valued member of the governance team. This individual will be expected to build upon the successes of the existing two districts and possess the people and organizational skills required to combine the policies, plans, budgets and staff members of the two districts.
The Community
The Trinity Alps Unified School District is located in the lower reaches of the Cascade Range in northern California, midway between Redding in Shasta County and the northern redwood coast. Trinity County encompasses approximately 3,200 square miles of alpine grandeur. Clear, tumbling waters from snow packs high up under towering peaks course down through rock walled canyons. The Trinity River Scenic Byway traverses the county alongside State Route 299.
Opportunities for satisfying outdoor activities are limited only by your own imagination. The area offers conveniences and creature comforts in a natural environment without the hustle and hassle of more structured recreational communities.
The community of Weaverville hosts an active visual and performing arts community with many galleries, coffeehouses and a new performing arts center. Performances and art openings are continued throughout the year ensuring great entertainment on almost any given weekend. Weaverville and Trinity County offer a myriad of entertainment opportunities, both inside and outdoors.
The District
The Trinity Alps Unified School District was formed as a result of the November 2007 election and is comprised of the Trinity Union High School District and the Weaverville Elementary School District. There are approximately 900 students in the newly formed district. Weaverville Elementary School District has approximately 430 students K–8 and Trinity High School has approximately 480 students.
Both districts are proud of their programs and achievements.
The elementary district highlights the following:
- the school’s API score is currently 816.
- over 57% of their students are advanced or proficient in language arts and mathematics.
- art, music and GATE opportunities are offered by credentialed teachers.
- 6th thru 8th grade options are numerous and varied.
- support services are provided by resource specialists, a reading intervention teacher and a team of trained paraprofessionals.
- recently completed major modernization projects which significantly improved the learning environment for all students.
Trinity High School highlights the following:
- a small school that offers a wide range of extra curricular activities which include athletics, academic decathlon, drama, music, FFA, and a wide range of student clubs/organizations.
- offerings such as AP physics, AP history, AP English, AP biology and AP calculus, as well as advanced math classes.
- over 50% of the graduates go on to an institution of higher learning.
- Trinity High School was first established in 1906.
- The current site has been in existence since 1970.
- They are proud of their facilities and modern applications of technology.

The combined budget of both districts is estimated to be approximately $12 million.
Selection Criteria
The following criteria represent standards to be used in the evaluation of applications and in the selection of the superintendent. The criteria are not totally exclusive or inclusive. The board realizes that no single candidate is likely to possess all the criteria. The board is looking for a person who has:
Professional Experience and Preparation
- Master’s degree required
- California Administrative Credential or equivalent required
- District office and school site administrative experience highly desirable
- K–12 classroom teaching experience highly desirable
Personal Characteristics
The successful candidate:
- Has a willingness to participate and become involved in this community
- Has had many educational experiences K through 12th grade
- Is a creative, resourceful leader who possesses a good sense of humor
- Is honest and has the ability to make “tough” decisions in the best interests of students
- Is an effective communicator who establishes formal and informal methods of communicating with all stakeholders
- Is a good listener and responsive to input
- Understands rural, mountain communities and sees themselves (and their family) living here for an extended period of time
- Possesses a visible and active style that promotes accessibility and availability
- Is respectful and values a diverse population
- Can develop trusting relationships throughout the system by holding people accountable, yet recognizing and celebrating success and excellence
- Follows through and is a “doer”
- Demonstrates an appreciation for learning by being a life-long learner
Professional Skills and Abilities
The successful candidate:
- Understands school finances and is a creative resourceful leader who has a history of being able to leverage funds
- Has been involved in or led a district in developing a successful comprehensive strategic plan
- Has an understanding and experience marketing excellent schools and programs
- Demonstrates an ability to collaborate with other public and private agencies; develops partnerships with the business community
- Has a record of creating a district climate of cooperation and collaboration with employee groups
- Creates and works well with effective teams at all levels
- Has a strong background in curriculum and instruction
- Understands and has success using a variety of techniques in collective bargaining
- Works well with board members individually and collectively
- Understands the dynamics and politics of a small rural community
- Understands the principals of leading a strong governance team

All applicants must provide the following items by the closing date, April 7, 2008 (5:00 p.m.), to be considered:
- A completed Application Information Form. (Please complete as instructed; do not complete by stating “see attached résumé”.) The Application Information Form and brochure may be downloaded via CSBA’s Web page at www.csba.org/es.
- A personal letter of application stating reasons for interest in the Trinity Alps Unified School District superintendent position.
- A résumé providing biographical background information about educational preparation, experience and achievements.
- A placement file and/or five (5) current letters of professional references describing the applicant’s performance in previously held positions.

Selection Procedure
A professional screening committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant. The board and the screening committee will use the described criteria during the screening, interviewing, and final decision-making process. After meeting with the screening committee, the board will select and interview the top candidates. Reference checks will only be conducted for those candidates selected for an interview.
The board will select candidates for the final interviews, conduct the interviews, and select the superintendent. Any candidate who contacts board members with the intent of influencing the board’s decision will be disqualified. Travel expenses for those candidates selected for the initial interview will be the responsibility of the candidate.
Salary and Contract Terms
The Trinity Alps Unified School District Board of Education will offer a competitive and negotiable salary to the successful candidate, based on that individual’s experience and qualifications.
It is the candidate’s responsibility to provide the district with employment eligibility and verification of citizenship in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
