Speakers announced for 2005 CSBA Annual Education Conference and Trade Show

Three outstanding speakers are lined up for this year’s Annual Education Conference and Trade Show, which will be held Dec. 1-3 in San Diego.

Juan Enriquez, one of the world’s foremost authorities on the economic and political impacts of the life sciences, will be the general session speaker on Thursday, Dec. 1. He is the author of “As the Future Catches You: How Genomics & Other Forces are Changing Your Life, Work, Health & Wealth,” a best-selling book about how advances in the life sciences have reshaped companies, industries and nations. His latest book, “The Untied States of America: Polarization, Fracturing, and Our Future,” will be released in November.

On Friday, Dec. 2, Jennifer James will speak about how to change and take risks, since Americans are now asked to think, work and feel in new ways. A cultural anthropologist, James’ thought-provoking, innovative and humorous talks have helped people around the world meet the challenge of transition. She is the founder of the Committee for Children, a nonprofit organization that develops curricula for the protection of children and the development of alternatives to violence. Her latest book, “Cultural Intelligence,” will be published soon.

Following a very successful format introduced last year, the third general session on Saturday, Dec. 3, will feature “State of the State,” a candid look at state and federal education funding for 2006. California’s school finance leaders – CSBA Executive Director Scott P. Plotkin, Assistant Executive Director of Governmental Relations Rick Pratt, Rick Simpson, Deputy Chief of Staff for the Speaker of the Assembly, and Ken Hall, Chairman of School Services of California, Inc. – complete the panel.

Student Performers

In September, CSBA’s Annual Education Conference and Trade Show Planning Committee will be selecting student performance groups to perform at the beginning of each general session. The committee is seeking performers of all ages, representing districts of various sizes. Actual performance time is approximately 10 minutes. Travel and other expenses are the responsibility of the district.

To apply, submit a letter and group resume/history on district letterhead to Kristy Bird Trouchon, CSBA Program Manager, along with an audio or video sample of the proposed performance. The deadline is Sept. 9.
