Improving High School: A Strategic Approach
The Legislative Analyst’s Office examined the situation of high school dropouts and students on a “general” or “university” track, and makes recommendations about what the Legislature might do to improve the prospects for each group of students.

The Partnership for Reading has produced a Spanish translation of “Put Reading First: Helping Your Child Learn to Read – A Parent Guide.” This brochure suggests ways parents can reinforce reading instruction at home with everyday activities and interactions. 

California’s Hidden Teacher Spending Gap

This report by the Education Trust-West reveals discrepancies in spending on teacher salaries between schools within the same district that serve a high percentage of poor and minority students and those serving higher-income and white students. 

What the U.S. Can Learn from Singapore’s World-Class Mathematics System (and what Singapore can learn from the United States)
This study prepared for the U.S. Department of Education by the American Institutes for Research finds that Singapore’s world-class mathematics system has quality components aligned to produce students who learn mathematics to mastery, whereas the U.S. mathematics system does not have similar features. The researchers recommend that publishers offer rich problem-based learning examples and strengthen the development of the conceptual understanding of mathematical topics. 

From the Capital to the Classroom: Year 3 of the No Child Left Behind Act
The Center on Education Policy found that most states do not have the capacity to assist schools needing improvement according to the terms of the act, jeopardizing the progress many are making in closing achievement gaps. The report calls for changes in accountability rules for disabled students and English language learners. Case studies include two California districts. 

The Impact of the No Child Left Behind Act on Student Achievement and Growth: 2005 Edition
This report by the Northwest Evaluation Association distinguishes between student achievement levels – which have improved since No Child Left Behind was implemented – and achievement growth, which has declined slightly. The study also evaluated achievement gaps among ethnic groups.
