Building balance and vocabulary: Curriculum Institute speakers to show how to draw out each student’s best

"Continuing the tradition of informing school leaders about up-and-coming, “hot button” education issues, CSBA’s Curriculum Institute will feature speakers specializing in a spectrum of student needs. The institute is July 7-8 in Monterey.

During the first general session, educational consultant Maria C. Foseid will share successful practices that are showing results in leveling the playing field for many students. Building the academic background knowledge of students by helping them acquire a core vocabulary common among more successful students is a prerequisite for academic progress, Foseid says.

In the second general session, Denise Clark Pope will speak about how students in today’s high-stakes world can be affected by academic stress – having too much work to do and too little time in which to do it, with little time for reflection. Pope, a lecturer at Stanford University School of Education, will discuss what board members and school administrators need to consider in order to ensure that students leave school as well-balanced, healthy, imaginative young adults.

Additionally, Ida Oberman, Director of Research and Evaluation for Springboard Schools (formerly known as the Bay Area School Reform Collaborative), will speak about practices the organization’s research team found to work in three California high schools serving large populations of low-income, minority and English-language learner students. Springboard recently published the study as “Challenged Schools, Remarkable Results.”

The institute also features several breakout sessions, including a preview of the conclusions reached by CSBA’s High School Reform Task Force and a discussion of what makes the arts so essential in the education of well-rounded students, among other timely subjects.
