Unity ’06 leadership summit in San Diego Oct. 6-7

Leading members of the education community and government officials are among dozens of speakers to be featured at the California Latino School Boards Association’s Unity 2006 leadership summit in San Diego Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6-7.
Welcoming remarks on Oct. 6 will be delivered by CSBA’s Director-at-Large, Black, Gwen Estes; Director-at-Large, Hispanic, Dr. Susan Heredia; Director-at-Large, Asian Pacific Islander, Ben Liao; Director-at-Large, County, Sara Wilkins; and Director-at-Large, American Indian, Shelly Yarbrough.
Breakout sessions and topics that morning include a presentation on children’s health by the National Education Leadership Initiative; a discussion of how CSBA and CLSBA work together, featuring CSBA President-elect Dr. Kathy Kinley, Assistant Executive Director, Governance and Policy Services Martin Gonzalez and Director-at-Large Heredia; and a board member training session on avoiding conflicts with superintendents. Dr. Kinley will be the guest of honor at the Unity ’06 luncheon that day.
Afternoon breakout sessions begin with a legislative update from CSBA Assistance Executive Director, Governmental Relations Rick Pratt, Senior Legislative Advocate Erika Hoffman and CSBA Region 23 Director Robert Cruz, a trustee in the Charter Oak School District.
Other topics and speakers include a presentation on the California Latino Superintendents Association’s Administrator Mentoring Program with Dr. Fernando Elizondo, CALSA’s executive director, and a strategy session on local bond elections.
A dinner dance that evening will honor keynote speaker Assembly Member Mervyn Dymally, chair of the Legislative Black Caucus and of the Assembly budget subcommittee on education finance.
Highlights of Saturday’s schedule include a discussion on building educational leadership with Luis Arteaga, executive director of the Latino Issues Forum; board member training in conflict resolution; and a discussion on legal issues of the high school exit exam.
