Updated CSBA charter manual now available online and for free

The 2008 edition of CSBA’s “Charter Schools: A Manual for Governance Teams” is now available on the association’s Web site. There is no charge to access, read or download the handbook.

“The revised manual is current on all new charter legislation and provides guidance to charter authorizers on everything from reviewing petitions to providing oversight, as well as a discussion of the process for charter revocations,” said Stephanie Farland, CSBA senior research and policy consultant and a key adviser on the project. Also covered are sections on converting low-performing schools to charter schools and an explanation of the responsibilities of school districts and county offices of education in providing facilities for charter school startups.

“CSBA’s thinking has matured over the last several years about authorizing charters and how it should be done effectively, so the new manual reflects that thinking,” Farland said.

“A lot of bills have passed into law in the three years since we published the previous manual. We want our members to know as much about them as possible,” she added.

The new online format will allow CSBA to update the manual on an ongoing basis to ensure that districts and county offices of education are kept up-to-date on all the information they need.

A printed version of the manual will be available for purchase at CSBA’s bookstore during the 2008 Annual Education Conference and Trade Show at the San Diego Convention Center Dec. 4-6.
