Achievement Collaborative: CSBA partners in an integrated approach to student performance 

CSBA, School Services of California and Dave Long & Associates have recently partnered to offer school districts and county offices of education a comprehensive, integrated approach to enhance student performance through the Achievement Collaborative.

“We believe that the best and most effective way to improve outcomes for students is an integrated approach that combines governance, instructional support, and fiscal and human resources, all into one,” Terry Anderson, associate vice president of School Services and project manager of the Achievement Collaborative, says in a complimentary Webcast, which models how that integrated approach can help guide decision-making. “CSBA is really excited about the opportunity that the Achievement Collaborative provides,” CSBA Assistant Executive Director Holly Jacobson says in the Webcast. “So much of the work of districts happens in silos, and so while we may work really hard to make a board effective, it doesn’t necessarily translate into improved student achievement because we’re not integrating with the folks who work on curriculum and instruction issues and human resources and fiscal issues. So the opportunity to integrate all of that work, to have the system moving together in the same direction, is really exciting for us.”

“What you spend is a reflection of who you are,” Jannelle Kubinec, associate vice president at School Services of California, explains in the Webcast. “You can write great plans, you can have great intentions but, ultimately, what gets spent is what gets done.”

“We come from different areas [and] backgrounds,” notes Dave Long, a former county office of education superintendent and secretary of education in the Schwarzenegger administration.

“We need to integrate those silos in the things we do so that we have a system approach, and then we can make some systemic change,” Long continues. “Now is the time for that. The state is looking for it, the government is looking for it, and I know that local boards and superintendents are looking for some creative change so that they can serve those children.”

The Achievement Collaborative is ready to help school districts and county offices of education develop those integrated approaches. In fact, it offered a complimentary seminar in Montebello last month to advise participants on how to effectively communicate with parents and the community about the recently released Standardized Testing and Reporting Program results, and more projects are under development.
