Plan now for Back-to-School and AEC

Those who hesitate will have lost $30 if they miss the Aug. 14 deadline to register for CSBA’s Annual Education Conference and Trade Show, which is returning to the San Diego Convention Center Dec. 1–3.

Another upcoming event, the Back-to-School Webcast that the association is offering Sept. 22, is coming up faster and offers an even bigger bargain—it’s free, in fact—but it does require registration.

The Back-to-School Webcast will provide in-depth briefings on current education issues, including the new state budget. The state budget maintains spending for K–12 public schools at essentially the same level as in 2010–11, with a new deferral of $2.1 billion that brings the total amount of postponed payments to schools in recent years to $9.4 billion—essentially sloughing off the state’s cash-flow problems to schools, with their limited borrowing capacity.

Beyond that, schools and community colleges are vulnerable to midyear budget cuts of up to $1.9 billion, if total state revenues fall short of projections by $2 billion or more—yet Assembly Bill 114 limits the provisions school districts can make to guard against those cuts (see related story).

CSBA governmental relations and policy experts will parse the implications for school governance teams and also review other state and federal legislation, regulations and legal action. The Back-to-School Webcast will bring that analysis directly to registered CSBA members’ own computers. It will be transmitted live from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 22, a Thursday. This marks the fifth year that CSBA is offering this conference over the Internet—no registration fee or travel time required; a registration link is below.

AEC: Increase effectiveness and achievement

The Annual Education Conference—AEC—is CSBA’s premier continuing education program, delivering practical solutions to help governance teams from school districts and county offices of education improve student learning and achievement. Nationally renowned General Session speakers and scores of breakout sessions will offer information and insights to increase governance teams’ effectiveness and boost student achievement levels.

Those who take advantage of early AEC registration can save $30 off the $455 rate that takes effect Aug. 15—and $100 off the on-site registration fee. Room blocks at several hotels near the San Diego Convention Center are also available.
