New CSBA Policy Brief launches series on governance issues for Common Core State Standards

To support implementation of Common Core State Standards at the local level, CSBA's Policy and Programs Department is initiating a series of policy briefs: Governing to the Core.

“With Governing to the Core, we are dealing with a crucial new policy that’s in the process of implementation—statewide and in every school district and county office of education—over an extended period of time,” said Christopher Maricle in CSBA’s Policy and Programs Department, who’s overseeing the series. “The policy briefs will walk governing boards through the implementation process, raising issues and answering questions to help school board members at the governance level.”

Starting with a convenient question-and-answer format, the first installment progresses to a timeline of key dates in Common Core’s implementation. From there, recommended “governing conversations” offer further insights to help apply the information to school boards’ major areas of responsibility: setting direction, establishing structure; providing support to staff; ensuring program accountability; and providing community leadership.

“The goal is to provide more focused and in-depth policy work over a period of time that culminates at our Annual Education Conference and Trade Show, with workshops and study sessions on the focus issue. Board members will be well-informed from the policy briefs, so our engagement with them at AEC can be less about giving information and more about having an authentic exchange of ideas around the information they already have,” Maricle explained.

On  related note, CSBA is collecting members’ feedback on the association’s work in key policy areas, Maricle continued.
