Governance and Policy ResourcesResearch, guidance and services for effective school board governance

Expanded learning opportunities – such as before and after school programming, and summer learning – when implemented with fidelity, directly support academic success and equip students with the skills necessary to be effective learners and leaders. Research demonstrates that participation in expanded learning opportunities can results in less disciplinary action, lower dropout rates, better academic performance in school, improved homework completion, and improved work habits. In particular, evidence shows that afterschool and summer learning programs can help address the achievement gap that occurs during this extended period when lower income children and youth have less access to enrichment opportunities than their more affluent and advantaged peers.
