San Francisco Unified School District Board Member Jill Wynns Elected President of the California School Boards Association

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WEST SACRAMENTO, CA— San Francisco Unified School District Board Member Jill Wynns began her term as president of the California School Boards Association on Saturday, December 3, upon the close of the 2011 CSBA Annual Education Conference and Trade Show.

“I am privileged and honored to serve as CSBA’s next president,” said Wynns.  “Education is the foundation of our democracy, and as we assess the state of public education in California in 2011, we see extraordinary progress and difficult challenges. We have a lot of work to do. As president, I will strongly advocate for our elected school boards to receive the resources they need to forge the brightest possible future for our state and our children.”

Wynns served as the Region 5 CSBA Director for nine years, representing San Francisco and San Mateo counties. She also served on the CSBA Delegate Assembly for 10 years.

She is the longest serving school board member ever in San Francisco and was initially elected in 1992. In those 19 years, she has chaired the SFUSD Budget and Business Services, the Curriculum and Program, and the Rules, Policy and Legislation Committees. She was a leader in the drafting and passage of the Public Education Enrichment Fund and the Quality Education parcel tax.

Wynns is a leader in the urban education community.  She has served on the board of the Council of Urban Boards of Education of the National School Boards Association, is an active participant in the Council of the Great City Schools and is a former president of the Association of California Urban School Districts.

“Jill will be a great leader for CSBA,” said Immediate Past President Martha Fluor. “She is passionate about public education, and is one of the smartest, most articulate truth tellers I’ve had the pleasure to work with.”

Wynns resides in San Francisco with her husband George. They have three children and two grandchildren.

She will be joined on the CSBA Executive Committee in 2012 by CSBA President-Elect Cindy Marks, Vice President Josephine “Jo” Lucey and Immediate Past President Martha Fluor. The officers are elected by the delegates at the Delegate Assembly meeting just prior to the CSBA Annual Education Conference.
