Golden Bell Award winners to be honored at CSBA Annual Education Conference

Program Celebrating 35 Years of Recognition for Excellence in California’s Public Schools

SACRAMENTO, Calif., (December 9, 2014) – The California School Boards Association (CSBA) will present its prestigious Golden Bell Awards to 62 school districts and county offices of education from across the state at a recognition luncheon held during the association’s Annual Education and Trade Show on December 16, 12:15 p.m. – 2 p.m. at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

The CSBA Golden Bell Awards program, now in its 35th year, promotes excellence in education and school board governance by recognizing outstanding programs and governance practices of school boards in school districts and county offices of education throughout California. The competition highlights best practices in education and distinguishes innovative and sustainable programs while focusing on the needs of all public school students.

“California schools continue to deliver exemplary and leading-edge programs, even in challenging fiscal times,” said CSBA President and Cupertino Union School District board member Josephine Lucey. “The Golden Bell Awards celebrate that excellence and reflect the depth and breadth of education programs and governance decisions supporting programs that are necessary to address students’ changing needs. We applaud the commitment of school leaders to serve California’s school children with innovative programs that make a difference.”

Programs that help public schools close the achievement gap garnered the most honors this year. Eleven awards will be given to school districts that are helping students achieve through intervention and teacher collaboration programs, learning communities, advance placement programs, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) advanced learning centers, use of data and other innovations.

Experts from California school districts and county offices of education made up the 26-member judging panel. Awardees will be honored in the following categories:

•    Community Schools through Partnerships and Collaboration
•    County Offices of Education
•    Curriculum and Instruction
•    Early Childhood Education
•    Juanita Haugen Memorial Award for Civic Education

•    Professional Development and Teacher Recruitment/Retention
•    School Climate
•    Student Services
•    Sustainable, Renewable, Energy and Resource Efficient Programs
•    Wellness
