CSBA Honors Two State Senators with Outstanding Legislator Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SACRAMENTO, Calif., (December 17, 2014) – The California School Boards Association (CSBA) has honored California State Senator Marty Block (D-San Diego) and former State Senator Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana) with its 2014 Outstanding Legislator award in recognition of their work to promote the interests of public schools.

CSBA’s Outstanding Legislator of the Year award is presented to California legislators who demonstrate significant commitment and legislative contributions to public education; recognize and support local education governance; support K-12 legislative proposals; and have a comprehensive understanding of the education issues local school districts and county offices currently face.

Senators Block and Correa were honored Monday, December 15 during CSBA’s Annual Education Conference in San Francisco. The award was presented by CSBA President Josephine Lucey.

Senators Block and Correa both served in 2014 on the Senate Education Committee and Block chaired the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Committee Subcommittee #1 on Education. Both Senators are well known in their communities and in Sacramento as avid supporters of public schools and the students they serve. As chair of the Senate budget subcommittee on education, Block supported the Local Control Funding Formula and the recent investments made in public schools through the LCFF and additional investments in Common Core State Standards implementation. Correa authored CSBA-sponsored legislation which proposed modifying the dismissal process for teachers charged with certain serious and egregious conduct.

“Senators Block and Correa are very deserving of this honor. They are active within the school community in their Senate Districts and our members know them well. They exemplify what is good about our State Legislature and how elected leaders at the state level can and should interact with school board members, school employees, parents and students back home,” said Lucey, CSBA president and board member in the Cupertino Union School District. “They exemplify collaboration and representation, and serve as a great role model for us all.”

Senator Block represents the 39th State Senate District, which includes Coronado, Del Mar, La Jolla, San Diego and Solana Beach.

“It is an honor to be recognized by California’s school boards for our joint effort to ensure that state dollars follow student need. Ensuring equity is an ongoing struggle, but now we are further along to reaching that goal. I appreciate CSBA’s efforts and support as we work to create the best education system in the nation,” said Block.

Former Senator Correa represented the 34th State Senate District, which includes Anaheim, Buena Park, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Santa Ana, Stanton and Westminster.

"I am overwhelmed by CSBA's recognition. During my 14 year tenure in the state legislature, I have enjoyed working alongside CSBA who has tirelessly been committed to advancing the policy priorities of our state's public schools,  promoting the importance of public education, and assuring that our children learn in a safe environment." said Correa.
