Disasters come in many forms, can occur anywhere at any time and run the gambit from natural causes such as earthquakes, fires, floods, and severe storms to man-made causes such as an active shooter, chemical spills or community members not following masking rules on district/county property. Knowing how to react and respond in a time of crisis can go a long way to keeping you and your students out of harm’s way. Whether at the elementary, middle or high school levels, school site and district/county office - level emergency preparedness efforts and emergency plans help to keep students and staff safe.
Join this Leadership Institute meal function keynote event to hear from Mark Ghilarducci, Director, Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, whose goal is to provide school board members with direct and easy access to pertinent emergency preparedness information and resources.
This keynote address will focus on hazard preparedness by highlighting processes/procedures and relationships that need to be in place with key agencies to prepare for disasters, as well as post-disaster recovery approaches. Engage in a Q&A session with experts immediately following the keynote address.

Keynote Speakers
Dr. Victor Rios
Associate Dean of Social Sciences and MacArthur Foundation Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara
Professor Rios works with local school districts to develop programs for students who have been left behind in their education. Using his personal experience of living on the streets, dropping out of school and being incarcerated as a juvenile — along with his research findings — he has developed interventions for marginalized students aimed at promoting personal transformation and civic engagement. These programs have been implemented in many schools across the United States, juvenile detention facilities and alternative high schools. He is also the author of six books including My Teacher Believes in Me: The Educator’s Guide to At-Promise Students (2019); Street Life: Poverty, Gangs, and a Ph.D. (2011); Buscando Vida, Encontrando Éxito: La Fuerza de La Cultura Latina en la Educación (2016); and Human Targets: Schools, Police, and the Criminalization of Latino Youth (2017). He received his Ph.D. at the University of California Berkeley in 2005
Dr. Natalie Stavas
Award-winning Harvard physician, mentor, runner, and international humanitarian
Dr. Stavas went from runner to first responder in the 2013 Boston Marathon.As the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia physician approached the finish line of her fifth Boston marathon on April 15, 2013, she heard explosions and ran towards them. Arriving at the scene she went to work administering CPR, applying tourniquets and triaging the wounded. She has been featured on the cover of Runner’s World and Sports Illustrated. She has also made appearances on CNN, BBC, CBS, Fox News, in the New York Times, LA Times, The Boston Globe, The Huffington Post, and People magazine. Dr. Stavas was named 2013 Bostonian of the Year by The Boston Globe and is the recipient of the 2012 Change Maker Award from The Boston Foundation. Following the bombing, Dr. Stavas was named one of “Boston’s Best” by Improper Bostonian Magazine. She is a contributor to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and works as a medical correspondent. She is a dedicated mentor with a nonprofit guiding inner-city youth on a path toward their full potential through running called Sole Train. Stavas attacks every obstacle with a fearless attitude and desire to lead. “You run towards that which you fear, that which challenges you, that which is oppositional,” she said, explaining her philosophy that running toward chaos actually makes it more manageable.

Friday at 5 p.m., enjoy a free, self-guided tour at the GRAMMY Museum.
