AEC: 7 strands offer what governance teams need

CSBA’s Annual Education Conference and Trade Show is the state’s premier event to give school board members and superintendents the tools they need to carry out their governance role.

This year’s conference, set in San Francisco Nov. 29 to Dec. 1, is full of practical, timely guidance and suggestions. The seven conference strands include more than 100 sessions, so every AEC attendee should find a wealth of offerings geared to their needs and interests.
To highlight just one session from each strand:

Full Service Community Schools: CSBA’s focus on this crucial issue continues with a session featuring President Jill Wynns with the director of the National Center for Community Schools and experts from California school districts who are pioneering strategies that bring school and community partners together to create new opportunities for students.

Emerging Trends in Education: The connection between teacher evaluations and student achievement is among the most significant new trends. In “Evaluating Teacher Evaluation: Drawing From Research on Teacher Effectiveness.” nationally prominent Stanford University professor Linda Darling-Hammond will review what the research says and discuss effective and equitable methods of evaluating teacher performance.

Student Achievement: “Dropout Prevention: Solutions to Halt the Epidemic” will be led by Russell Rumberger, director of the California Dropout Research Project at UC Santa Barbara. He’ll share successful models that conference-goers can put into practice at home to keep their students in school and on track to success.

The Digital Age: It’s nothing if not cool, but keeping up with all the changes in technology can be overwhelming. Perennial AEC favorite Jim Spellos will offer the latest in his “Way Cool Tools” presentation, answering questions to help you keep up and increase your T.Q. (technology quotient).

Advocacy and Engagement: CSBA Communications Director Laurie Weidner and Bill Newberry, board member in Corona-Norco USD, will lead a session offering hands-on training and tools to enhance the image of public schools among parents, community members, local government and the media.

Funding, Finance and Facilities: Is your district among the 188 considered at risk of insolvency? Do you want to avoid that? Learn how as the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team’s Chief Executive Officer Joel Montero identifies the warning signals and rapid-response strategies for districts with qualified or negative certifications.

Leadership Through Governance: Teachers know they need to consider their students’ culture and language to help them achieve, but how does culturally responsive teaching and learning play out in the boardroom? Understand how the governance team can exert influential leadership districtwide in a session with Sharroky Hollie, executive director of the Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning.
