Trainings coming for newer board members

CSBA offers 5 locations through March, some with Brown Act, Presidents Workshops

The best educational opportunity specifically for newly elected and first-term school board members is traveling to locations throughout the state in early 2013. CSBA’s Institute for New and First-term Board Members is designed to help trustees learn about their unique role and responsibilities, and sharpen their skills on effective governance, finance, human resources and student learning.

Over the course of two days, participants will explore the board’s role in each area and will be able to apply what they learn when they return to their respective school districts and county offices of education.

The dates and locations for 2013 are:

Jan. 25-26: Sacramento, Hyatt Regency Sacramento
Feb. 1-2: Millbrae, The Westin San Francisco Airport
Feb. 8-9: San Diego, Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina
March 1-2: Garden Grove, Hyatt Regency Orange County
March 8-9: Petaluma, Sheraton Sonoma County
March 15-16: Redding, Red Lion Hotel

Registration is $275 (or $285 on site), and superintendents may attend without charge if they accompany members of their boards.

Institutes coordinated with Brown Act,  Board Presidents workshops

The Institutes consist of two daylong sessions running from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In each location, the Institutes will complement another valuable CSBA training opportunity: The Brown Act: What You Need to Know. Running from 5:30-8:30 p.m., the Brown Act trainings are presented by knowledgeable attorneys who will unravel the complexities of California’s open meeting law. Advance registration is $145.

The Sacramento and Garden Grove Institutes also coincide with another useful training opportunity for more seasoned school board members—CSBA’s Board Presidents Workshop, providing current and aspiring board presidents with tools for strategic leadership.
The advance registration fee (up to five business days before the event) is $195; on-site registration is $205. Register for both the Board Presidents Workshop and The Brown Act during the same weekend for just $290 in advance, or $300 on site.
