Institute for New and First Term Board Members is part of CSBA’s new Governance U professional development offerings

More than ever, K-12 governance teams can rely on CSBA for unparalleled learning and professional development opportunities. Now those opportunities are coordinated in Governance U, the go-to source for continuing education in governance, with an interrelated menu of CSBA’s regional events, convenient webcasts and webinars, the Masters in Governance program and Annual Education Conference and Trade Show.

It all begins with Governance Basics, a variety of leadership training offerings that build a foundation for effective participation in your first years as a governance team member. The opportunities continue—and in some cases coincide—with a variety of offerings in both the Continuing Education component and CSBA’s recently redesigned Masters in Governance program.

Institute for New and First Term Board Members

The best educational opportunity specifically for newly elected and first-term school board members is now traveling to locations throughout the state: CSBA’s Institute for New and First term Board Members. This integral part of Governance Basics helps trustees learn about their unique role and responsibilities and sharpen their skills in governance, finance, human resources and student learning. Over the course of two days, participants will explore the board’s role in each area and will be able to apply what they learn when they return to their respective school districts and county offices of education.

The Institute consists of two daylong sessions running from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Early registration is $299 ($309 on site), and superintendents may attend without charge if they accompany members of their boards.

The Institute has already been offered this year in Sacramento, Garden Grove and Fresno. Remaining dates and locations for 2014 are:

Feb. 28-March 1: Burbank, Courtyard Los Angeles Burbank Airport
March 7-8: Burlingame, Hilton San Francisco Airport Bayfront
March 14-15: Redding, Red Lion Hotel

Institutes coordinated with Brown Act, Board Presidents workshops

In Burbank and Burlingame, the Institutes will complement another valuable CSBA training opportunity: The Brown Act: What You Need to Know. Running on Fridays from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the Brown Act trainings are presented by knowledgeable attorneys who will unravel the complexities of California’s open-meeting law. Advance registration is $175, or $185 on site.

As part of the team-building strategy that’s central to Governance U, the Burlingame Institute coincides with another useful training opportunity for more seasoned school board members—the Board Presidents Workshop, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. Part of CSBA’s Continuing Education component, this workshop provides current and aspiring board presidents with tools for focused leadership. Advance registration is $215, or $225 on site.

New this year—register for the Brown Act and Board Presidents Workshop Combo during the same weekend for just $340 in advance, or $350 on site.
