San Luis Coastal Board Member Chris Ungar Named President-Elect of CSBA

SACRAMENTO, Calif., (January 30, 2015) – Chris Ungar, a board member in the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, has been elected president-elect of the California School Boards Association (CSBA) by the organization’s Delegate Assembly in San Francisco.

Ungar has represented Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz counties on the CSBA Board of Directors from 2007 to 2013. In 2013 he served as vice president. He has served on CSBA committees for Board Development and the Diversity Task Force, and was chair of the Budget Committee in 2010 and CSBA’s Annual Education Conference Committee in 2008. Ungar previously served on the Delegate Assembly from 2004 to 2007, and was a member of the Nominating Committee in 2006. Most recently, he served as CSBA’s vice president.

“It is a great privilege to serve California schools as a member of the CSBA leadership team,” said Ungar. “I look forward to continuing to advance CSBA’s work as the leading voice for students in California.”

With 29 years of experience in special education, Ungar was the executive director of special education for the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education until his retirement in 2014. He began his career in education as a school speech and language pathologist and is a member of both the California and American Speech Hearing Associations.  

Ungar served as president of the San Luis Coastal USD Board of Trustees in 2011-2012, a position he also held in 2002-2003, 2006 and 2007. His interest areas include special education, vocational education, technology, school finance and revenue enhancement, educational leadership, governance, education politics, student diversity and fine arts education.

He has served on the board of directors of the Tri-Counties Education Association and the San Luis Obispo County School Boards Association, and is currently a director of Project Surf Camp, an organization that teaches children with disabilities to surf. Ungar is also a member of the Association of California School Administrators.

Ungar and his wife Elyse, a special education teacher, reside in Los Osos and have a son Casey, a graduate of San Francisco State University.
