Summer meal plans coming

Funding available; CDE offers trainings required of program sponsors

Do at least half of your students qualify for free or reduced-price school meals? Plan now to help them through the Summer Food Service Program. The federally funded program reimburses sponsors for administrative and operational costs of providing meals to children during the summer break—or whenever school is out of session for 15 continuous school days.

California Department of Education training is required to sponsor a program. Tentative CDE plans include daylong trainings in Long Beach March 13 and Los Angeles March 14, and two-part training webinars of four hours each on March 6-7 and April 2-3; two Northern California sessions were scheduled last month.

The CSBA policy brief “Providing Access to Nutritious Meals During Summer” has more information on the Summer Food Service Program, and our Web page on Student Physical Health and Wellness has more on the link between good nutrition and academic achievement—and on the role of school leadership in promoting student wellness.
