AEC to conclude with State of the State analysis

Wrapping up a watershed year in public education, CSBA’s Annual Education Conference and Trade Show is coming to San Diego Dec. 5-7, with more than 100 AEC presentations over the course of 2½ days.

And the final General Session—the State of the State, on Saturday, Dec. 7—is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to put all that information in context and look ahead to the next year.

CSBA Executive Director Vernon M. Billy will once again moderate the State of the State, joined by a powerhouse panel including a new guest: Wes Smith, Ed.D., former superintendent of the Morgan Hill Unified School District south of San Jose, who was named executive director of the Association of California School Administrators this year.

Returning to the State of the State panel are Dennis Meyers, CSBA’s assistant executive director for Governmental Relations; Ron Bennett, CEO of School Services of California Inc.; and Kevin Gordon, president of Capitol Advisors Group LLC.

The Local Control Funding Formula, with its fundamental shift in how the state distributes its K-12 public education dollars—and how local educational agencies are held accountable for that money—is sure to be a prime topic at the State of the State and throughout AEC.

Other developments have also affected California’s schools this year, including:

  • Implementation of Common Core State Standards
  • Assembly Bill 484, the measure authorizing the suspension of California Standards Tests to ease the transition to the Common Core curriculum and assessments
  • Other action in Sacramento, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere that affects our schools and the children who attend them.

Nearly a dozen other Annual Conference presentations related to the Local Control Funding Formula are planned as of press time. Read about LCFF-related sessions: www.csba.org/LCFFatAEC

But wait,there’s more!

Whatever your interests are, there’s a lot more on tap at CSBA’s Annual Education Conference and Trade Show. The action actually gets under way before the opening day, with a slate of pre-conference activities on Wednesday, Dec. 4:

  • Board Presidents Workshop: Tools for Strategic Leadership
  • Legal Symposium for Experienced Board Members
  • Orientation for New Trustees: Preparation for the First 100 Days

There are also optional breakfasts and luncheons with guest speakers and networking opportunities Thursday through Saturday—culminating in the popular Golden Bell Awards Luncheon that closes out the week’s education events, when this year’s recipients of CSBA’s esteemed awards receive their trophies.

Pre-registration for AEC closes Nov. 8; after that, the fee rises from $485 to $555, so act now and save!
