State Board of Education discusses LCAP documents, fines ETS

At its bimonthly meeting last week, the State Board of Education heard concerns about the growing size and complexity of LCAP documents. The board encouraged school districts to use innovative ways to make the LCAP easy to use and understand, such as by using infographics, but it took no official action on the issue. In other meeting items, the SBE approved a settlement in a lawsuit for students who were enrolled in classes but not taught. In Cruz v. State of California, the state agreed to provide aid and monitoring to four high schools in Southern California and two in Oakland. The SBE also fined the Educational Testing Service $3.1 million for delivering the Smarter Balanced Assessments late. Other items under discussion included a review of county office of education LCAPs, an update on the LCFF evaluation rubrics and test blueprints for the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California. Archived webcasts of the Nov. 4-5 meeting are available for viewing on the SBE’s website.
