Legislative Update: Reserve cap push continues; School Board Caucus meets

With two and a half weeks left in the 2016 legislative session, CSBA is asking members to continue efforts to contact legislators to urge a fix of the reserve cap before the sessions ends on Aug 31.

Phone calls from CSBA members to three key leaders in the Legislature are critical to reaffirm why the reserve cap is harmful to California schools and why this law must be fixed in August – before time runs out.

School Board Caucus meets on Aug. 9

The informal School Board Caucus, comprised of current California legislators who previously served on a school or county board, held its third meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 9 in downtown Sacramento. CSBA staff briefed Caucus members on the progress of the new LCFF rubric, with Assemblymembers Ed Chau (D-Arcadia), Kansen Chu (D-San Jose), Rich Gordon (D-Menlo Park) and Mark Stone (D-Scotts Valley) and Senator Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica) discussing what will be needed legislatively to support the efforts during the 2017-18 session when the rubrics are rolled out.

The 14-member School Board Caucus was assembled with the goal of identifying and generating dialogue on issues of critical importance to school governance leaders, and to California’s students and families. While four current Caucus members either term out or are not seeking reelection to their current seat, eight are in reelection bids and nine additional current and former school board members will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot in races for eight seats in the Legislature.
