Governance and Policy ResourcesResearch, guidance and services for effective school board governance

CSBA’s AI Taskforce is aimed at equipping boards of education with the necessary knowledge and tools to navigate the complexities of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the work of public school districts and county offices of education. With AI rapidly evolving and transforming industries, it is imperative that our education system stay ahead of the curve to maximize the benefits of AI while safeguarding the welfare of California’s students.

CSBA’s AI Taskforce embodies the association’s commitment to provide its members with the resources to make informed decisions that support student success and harness the power of innovation. Taskforce members will lead the charge of determining the specific work the group will engage in. The Taskforce may consider a multitude of issues related to AI and schools, including, but not limited to, how to positively integrate AI technology into the instructional setting; discussing the ethical, legal and privacy implications of AI usage in schools and identifying the appropriate policies for such use; and examining the potential benefits and risks of using AI technology in the classroom.

Some existing resources created by CSBA staff include the brief "Understanding Artificial Intelligence in K-12 Education: What Governance Teams Should Know" and articles "Exploring AI as an educational tool" and "AI has arrived: Artificial intelligence technology is already infiltrating classrooms." GAMUT members also have access to three AI-related policies: BP 5131.9 – Academic Honesty, BP 6154 – Homework and Makeup Work, and BP 6162.5 – Student Assessment. Check back for updates!
